How much does a website cost in the UK?

A plain-English guide for small businesses: what the typical options cost, what pushes the price up or down, and a few worked examples using my own prices.

Typical costs at a glance

Do it yourself (Wix, Squarespace and similar)Plus your own time to design, write and keep it updatedabout £15 – £40 a month
Freelance web designerTypical for a small business site of a few pagesabout £500 – £3,000
Web design agencyMore people involved, bigger projectsabout £3,000 – £10,000+
Online shopDepends on the number of products and how they are managedabout £1,500 – £10,000+
Custom booking or business softwareDepends on how much it needs to doabout £1,500 – £15,000+
Running costsdomain about £10 – £20 a year; hosting and care about £5 – £100 a month

These are rough, typical ranges to help you plan, not quotes. Prices vary a lot between suppliers.

What affects the price

Number of pages

A one-page site costs less than ten pages with their own content.

Features

Online booking, a shop, a blog or a gallery each add work.

Words and photos

Having them ready keeps the cost down. Help writing them adds a little.

Custom design

A design made for you costs more than a ready-made template, and tends to stand out more.

Connections

Linking to booking, payment or accounting tools adds setup time.

Looking after it

Updates, backups and security are an ongoing cost, unless you do them yourself.

Questions people ask

How much does a small business website cost in the UK?

Typically about £500 to £3,000 from a freelancer and £3,000 to £10,000 or more from an agency. My new websites start from £495 and redesigns from £395.

Is a website builder cheaper?

Builders cost about £15 to £40 a month, so they are cheap to start. The trade-off is your own time to design, write and maintain the site.

What are the ongoing costs of a website?

A domain name costs about £10 to £20 a year. Hosting and looking after the site cost about £5 to £100 a month depending on what is included. My care plan starts from £25 a month.

Why do quotes vary so much?

Suppliers include different things: design, number of pages, features, help with words, and ongoing care. Ask for a fixed quote that lists exactly what is included.
